Banerjee bags inter-college chess crown

Sumit Kumar Banerjee of host Madhusudan Law College won the individual title in the Utkal University Inter-College Chess Tournament, which concluded here at MS Law College today. As many as eight players tied for the top spot with six points each. Eventually Banerjee was declared champion via Buchholz tie-break method.

Top five finishers qualified to represent Utkal in the All-India Inter-University Tournament, scheduled to be held at Bhagalpur University (Bihar) in December. Other four qualifiers are: Baivab Mishra (SCS College, Puri), Pravat Kumar Satpathy (Christ College, Cuttack), Johnson Sahu (PG Vani Vihar) and Rajesh Nayak (Nimapara College).

All Odisha Chess Association secretary Vivek Kumar Tibarewal and S R Chess Centre secretary Satya Ranjan Patnaik handed over the prizes in the presence of organising committee secretary Dr Soumitra Kumar Chatterjee and MS Law College Physical Education Teacher Ambika Prasad Ray.

Earlier yesterday, SCS College (Puri) and Shailabala Women`s College (Cuttack) won the men and women team titles respectively. Christ College men and Emarti Devi College women finished runners-up.
